The IFA (formerly abbreviated as BGIA) is a test and certification body affiliated to the testing and certification system DGUV Test of the German Social Accident Insurance Institutions. The institute has received accreditation from the central office of safety technology of the Länder (ZLS). The IFA was notified to the Commission of the European Communities under the identification number 0121.

The IFA performs tasks as

  • a test and certification body for products under the terms of the EU regulation for personal protective equipment (EU 2016/425)
  • a test and certification body for products and partial tests under the terms of the EC Directive for machinery (2006/42/EEC)
  • a certification body for QA-systems as referred to in module D of the EU regulation for personal protective equipment (EU 2016/425)
  • an appointed test and certification body within the framework of the German Product Safety Act (Produktsicherheitsgesetz - ProdSG)
  • a test and certification body authorised to grant the DGUV Test-mark for safety-related components and groups of components and for measuring and sampling instruments used to determine pollutant concentrations at the workplace
  • a calibration body for noise measuring instruments used for preventive noise exposure measurements
  • a test laboratory for grinding tools
  • a test and certification body for blasting agents
