Exposure Monitoring and Exposure-effect Relationships

Exposure Database (MEGA), GESTIS Stoffenmanager®, Epidemiology, Statistics

The Section Exposure Monitoring and Exposure-effect Relationships of the Department Exposure and Risk Assessment maintains the IFA's MEGA exposure database and interprets its data. The MEGA unit provides and maintains the GESTIS Stoffenmanager® online tool and develops it further. The Epidemiology unit studies correlations between occupational and non-occupational factors and their possible effects on workers’ health. Chemical and physical exposures are among the factors taken into account. The aim is to gain insights for regulatory and in-company preventive activity and to formulate suitable measures. The Statistics unit provides support for statistical tasks throughout the IFA.

The primary activities of the section are:

  • Conducting and supervising epidemiological studies
  • Providing advice and conducting research for the German Social Accident Insurance Institutions on epidemiological issues, particularly concerning work-related health hazards
  • Assessing work-related risks
  • Determining dose-response relationships
  • Providing epidemiological expertise on committees
  • Advising on the incidence and severity of occupational diseases
  • Conducting intervention studies to optimise prevention measures taken by the German Social Accident Insurance Institutions
  • Intervention studies for the reduction of occupational accidents
  • Quality assurance in epidemiology
  • Publications promoting application-oriented epidemiology
  • Cooperation internationally with other OSH research institutes

MEGA (measurement data on exposure to hazardous substances at work)

The MEGA group is responsible for the IFA’s MEGA exposure database (measurement data on exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace) and the GESTIS-Stoffenmanager®.

IFA exposure database MEGA

MEGA documents the data gained from measurements of hazardous substances and biological agents conducted in the MGU, and evaluates these data with the aid of the MEGAPro evaluation software developed by the IFA. On behalf of the German Social Accident Insurance Institutions, the results of these evaluations of data on exposure to hazardous substances and biological agents are made available in the form of publications for the purposes of:

  • Prevention activity
  • Investigations into reported cases of substance-related occupational diseases
  • Epidemiology
  • REACH exposure scenarios
  • Validation and calibration of exposure assessment models

The group is involved in assuring the quality of the documented data and in continuous ongoing development of the documentation of relevant constraints in the MGU. In this context, it appoints representatives to committees of the DGUV and the individual German Social Accident Insurance Institutions. It is particularly involved in the planning of measurement campaigns to ensure that evaluation is adapted to the specific problem. The accident insurance institutions are trained in use of the MEGAPro evaluation software, with which they can evaluate their own specific data.

GESTIS Stoffenmanager®

Not all forms of hazardous substance exposure can be quantified by measurement. In conjunction with Cosanta BV, a company in the Netherlands, the section provides the GESTIS-Stoffenmanager®, a web-based software application for the quantitative non-metrological estimation of inhalation exposure.
